Eddie Howe: Dortmund defeat teaches Newcastle the 'fine margins' of the Champions League
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admits Borussia Dortmund dealt his side a lesson as they suffered their first Champions League defeat.
Eddie Howe is an English professional football manager, currently in charge of Premier League side Newcastle United.
The Buckinghamshire-born defender made 270 appearances for Bournemouth in three spells before ending his career at 29 due to a knee injury.
Having been a player-coach and youth coach at the Cherries, Howe was appointed permanent manager of the club in January 2009.
He earned them promotion to League One in 2010 but left in 2011 for a 19-month spell with Burnley, returning to manage Bournemouth in October of 2011.
He guided them from League One to the Premier League where they stayed for five years until relegation in 2020.
Howe left the club before their Championship campaign and was linked with roles at a number of clubs before being unveiled as the new manager of Newcastle United following their Saudi-backed takeover in November 2021.
In February 2023, he steered Newcastle to the Carabao Cup final but was unable to break the club's trophy major drought, that has lasted since 1969, as Manchester United claimed a 2-0 win at Wembley.
During his first spell at the club, Howe racked up 200 appearances for the Cherries, becoming a household name in the Bournemouth defence.
Howe later signed for Championship side Portsmouth in March 2002 for £400,000. However, a knee injury on debut was a sign of things to come.
It ruled Howe out for the entire of the 2002/03 campaign. After again injuring his knee, he returned to playing in January 2004, earning a loan move back to Bournemouth for the start of the 2004/05 season.
The loan deal was made permanent thanks, in part, to a fans fund and he made a further 53 appearances before retiring in 2007 aged 29.
Quinn was sacked in December that year and Howe was appointed caretaker-manager, a move that was made permanent in the January.
Howe took over with the club 17 points from safety but masterminded a remarkable turnaorund to help the club hang on to their League Two status.
The momentum was maintained and the following season Bournemouth finished second to gain automatic promotion to League One.

Having turned down the manager's role at Peterborough, Howe was becoming increasingly sought after and he was linked with roles at Crystal Palace, Burnley and Charlton Athletic. However, the lure of Championship club Burnley proved too strong and he took over at Turf Moor in January 2011.
In his first season, Burnley finished in a promising eighth place before sliding down to 13th in 2011/12.
He left Burnley at the end of the campaign due to personal reasons before rejoining Bournemouth once more - and this time it would be extra special.
Two League One Manager of the Month awards were picked up in his first season back on the south coast as Bournemouth gained automatic promotion to the Championship.
The Cherries finished a respectable 10th in 2013/14 before Howe achieved the impossible dream - promotion to the Premier League as champions.
His success at Bournemouth was recognised by his peers as Howe was named Manager of the Decade at the Football League Awards.
Howe and Bournemouth would endure a historic five-year stay in the Premier League - their best season being a ninth-placed finish in 2016/17.
Howe left the club by mutual consent after a memorable eight-year journey in which he had cemented himself as a true Bournemouth legend.
After a year out of the game in which he was heavily linked with the manager's role at Celtic, among others, Howe returned as the new boss of Newcastle United in November 2021.
Howe is married to Vicki Howe and the couple have three sons together. Howe is an Everton fan, despite being born in Amersham. He later moved and grew up in Verwood, Dorset.
Eddie Howe's net worth is reported to be £4million.
