Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk talks ‘heating up’ as ‘optimism’ over fight agreement grows

Talks between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Uzyk are “heating up” as per reports, with the fight expected to take place next year.

According to Mike Coppinger, it is looking likely that Tyson Fury will face Oleksandr Usyk in a world heavyweight unification bout “next year”. 

It was initially hoped that Fury would face Usyk at the start of this year after the Brit beat Derek Chisora in a one-sided trilogy bout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last December. 

The two champions ended up going in different directions after Fury made unnecessary demands to his rival during negotiations. 

Usyk successfully defended his world titles last month in a huge stadium fight in Poland against Daniel Dubois, while Fury is due to face ex-UFC world champion Francis Ngannou in a huge crossover event in Saudi Arabia on October 28. 

It was feared that this novelty fight could end boxing fans’ hopes of getting Fury vs Usyk, but this dream matchup is now back on the table.

Respected boxing journalist Coppinger has told ESPN that “there’s a lot of optimism” that Fury vs Usyk will happen next year.

“I’m told that talks are really heating up to match Fury & Usyk next year in Saudi Arabia,” Coppinger told ESPN. 

He added: “There’s a lot of optimism from the people I spoke to that fight is finally going to happen, provided Fury gets past [Francis] Ngannou, which I don’t think anyone is worried about that. I guess you never know. 

“Fury today has been taking shots at Usyk, saying, ‘Oh, you got hit by what wasn’t a low blow. You should have lost to [Daniel] Dubois. 

“Obviously, it was a low blow.  Let’s be real, but I do think we’re finally going to get that fight, and if we get it next year, great, because a Fury-Ngannou fight can only build interest for a fight between Fury & Usyk.”

Fury recently suggested that his proposed fight with Usyk is “simmering” and he is giving people “something to look forward to”. 

“Traditional boxing is low-time s**t.  This is colossal, global phenomenon,” Fury told Seconds Out. 

“If I go beat that little middleweight [Usyk] in two rounds, then you definitely have nothing to look forward to. All the time, it’s simmering, people have something to look forward to in the future. I’m looking forward to kicking his a**, Ngannou’s a**.”
