Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is a Mexican professional boxer who is a four-division world champion and currently holds the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine super middleweight titles.
Canelo signed an 11-fight, $365million deal with DAZN - boxing's most lucrative deal, although he negotiated his release from the deal after three fights to become a free agent.
Becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion
He is trained by father-and-son Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, who are regarded by many as the best coaches in the world.
When will Canelo fight next?
The greatest hits: Cotto, Mayweather and Khan
Canelo's resume is one of the most impressive in world boxing and it began with victory over the likes of Austin Trout and Mosley as he extended his unbeaten record to 43 bouts.
His first major test was against Floyd Mayweather in 2014. Billed as "The One", Mayweather challenged Canelo for the WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine at 154-pounds in Las Vegas.
A 22-year-old Canelo would come up short against Mayweather, who provided a boxing masterclass to win on points. Despite a dominant performance, judge C. J. Ross scored the contest 114-114 which sparked universal criticism.
Mayweather took home a guaranteed purse of $44million while Canelo received a minimum of $5million. The fight itself generated $150million from 16,746 tickets sold and 2.2million pay-per-view buys in America.
Following his first defeat as a professional, Canelo's comeback trail included wins over Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland and Cotto to win the vacant WBC and Ring titles at 160-pounds.
His next super-fight saw him lined up against Britain's Amir Khan at a catchweight of 155-pounds in 2016. The announcement of the fight shocked the boxing fraternity with Khan's previous fight two divisions below at welterweight.
T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, hosted the event and in doing so became the first sporting event to take place at the arena in its first year open.
Despite being outboxed and unable to deal with the speed of Khan in the opening four rounds, Canelo eventually closed Khan down and delivered one of the most sickening knockouts in recent times to end proceedings in round six.
The contest sold 600,000 PPVs in the United States on HBO.
A return to junior middleweight followed with a brutal win against another Briton in Liam Smith for the WBO strap before agreeing to face compatriot Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
The showdown took place on Cinco de Mayo weekend in 2017 at 164.5-pounds. With fears of Chavez's professional conduct, a clause was added into the contract for Chavez.
For every pound he weighed over the limit, he would be fined one million dollars. While the maverick Mexican hit the scales within the limit, he produced one of the most underwhelming performances boxing has ever seen.
All three judges scored it 120-108 in favour of Canelo in front of more than 20,000 unhappy fans in Nevada.
Canelo Alvarez vs Gennadiy Golovkin rivalry
In 2017, the boxing world finally got the fight they wanted between Canelo and Gennadiy Golovkin on Mexican Independence Weekend.
Going into the battle, GGG had earned the reputation of being the hardest-hitting middleweight in the world and had made 17 successful defences as a world champion prior to fighting Canelo.
In front of a live sold-out crowd of 22, 358, Golovkin dominated the ring but was denied the chance of inflicting a second defeat to Canelo with the scorecards declaring it a split draw (113-115, 114-114, 118-110).
Judge Adalaide Byrd received huge criticism for her 118-110 scoring in favour of Canelo. It was deemed by many as a robbery.
The rematch would take place 12 months later despite initially being slated to take place in May 2018. The fight got postponed due to Canelo failing a drugs test.
He tested positive for clenbuterol and was suspended by the Nevada State of Commission for six months despite pleading his innocence.
The build-up was an intense affair with 9,000 fans attending the weigh-in to witness a brawl between both camps.
Controversy would follow the second encounter with Canelo claiming a majority decision victory in front of more than 21,000 fans. The rematch generated 1.1 million PPV buys in America - compared to 1.4 million buys for their first bout on HBO.
Their PPV sales were the first to exceed one million without Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.
Canelo's net worth
Canelo's fortune is estimated at $180million.
Between June 2018 to June 2019, Canelo made around $95million in addition to lucrative purses from his fights against Khan, Golovkin, Mayweather, Cotto and Mosley which tallied up to $115million.
With a guarantee of $35million per fight at DAZN, Canelo is boxing's highest-paid fighter inside the ring.
He reportedly secured a total of $115m for the three Golovkin fights.
The Mexican superstar is also endorsed by brands such as Louis Vuitton and Everlast, which see him earn $2million a year, according to Forbes.
Personal life
Canelo has four children: three daughters and a son from four different relationships.
He was engaged to 2003 Miss Mexico Universe Marisol Gonzalez between 2010 to 2012, but is now married to Fernanda Gomez, the mother of his third daughter.
His parents, Ana Maria Barragan and Santos Alvarez, were both farmers and divorced in 2003, the same year he made his professional debut at the age of 15.
Canelo has seven brothers and a sister. All his brothers became professional boxers with three of them fighting at welterweight in Ramon Alvarez, Ricardo Alvarez and Rigoberto Alvarez.
