Jon Jones injury hands Tom Aspinal shot at interim heavyweight title

With Jon Jones no longer able to defend his UFC interim heavyweight title due to injury, Tom Aspinall will take on Sergei Pavlovich for the belt instead.

Jones was due to defend his title against Stipe Miocic in November but tore his pectoral tendon in training on Tuesday, ruling him out for up to eight months.

That means Aspinall, who comes from Salford, will now fight Sergei Pavlovich for the interim belt at UFC 295 next month.

UFC president Dana White wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Jon Jones was training last night, got injured, he was wrestling and he tore the tendon that connects your pec to the bone, off the bone,” White said.

“[Out] eight months, going to need surgery. He’s out.”

Jiri Prochazka’s light heavyweight title bout with Alex Pereira is the new headline event at Madison Square Garden.
