Ivan Toney is an English professional football player who plies his trade as a striker for Brentford in the Premier League.
Toney began his career at Northampton Town before moving on to Newcastle, but struggled to make the grade at the Magpies and was loaned out to Barnsley (twice) Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe (twice) and Wigan.
In 2018, he moved permanently to Peterborough United, where he established himself as a reliable goalscorer. His next move was to Brentford in 2020 and he has carried his solid form over from Posh to the Brentford.
Toney hit the ground running when he joined Brentford in September 2020 for a fee of £5million. He set a new Championship record for goals scored in a single season (31), and netted in the play-off final win over Swansea.
Having become the youngest-ever first-team player in Northampton Town's history, Toney continued to play for the youth team and scored four goals the following day in a 5-0 FA Youth Cup demolition of York City.
Toney made his first start for the first team on September 28, 2013, in a 0-0 draw with Morecambe at home, playing 74 minutes before he was replaced by Ben Tozer. In April 2014, he scored his first professional goals, netting a brace in the 3-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
However, after just four appearances for Newcastle he was swiftly moved on to a loan spell at Barnsley, scoring twice in 21 appearances. He spent the first half of the 2016/17 season on loan at Shrewsbury Town and the second at Scunthorpe United, scoring a total of 14 goals during that season - seven at each club.
On August 9, 2018, Toney joined Peterborough United on a long-term contract, with just four appearances under his belt from his time at Newcastle.
In the Covid-19-affected 2019/20 season, he fared even better, scoring 26 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions and winning the League One Player of the Season award.
On 31 August 2020, Toney left Peterborough for Brentford in a deal reportedly worth around £15million after add ons - making it a record deal for Posh. He was also linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur as backup for Harry Kane.
In 48 league appearances, Toney netted a remarkable 33 goals, including a penalty in the play-off finals against Swansea City to secure Brentford's promotion to the Premier League.
Despite speculation of a move to other Premier League sides, Toney stuck with Brentford in their first season back in top-flight soccer and got himself into double figures in the Premier League.
Toney ended the 2021/22 Premier League season with 12 goals, and put himself on the radar of the England manager Gareth Southgate.
In May 2023, Toney was handed his punishment of an eight-month ban.
Toney had scored 20 of Brentford's 54 Premier League goals in the 2022/23 season as well as having made his debut for Southgate's England side in what has been a breakthrough year for the former Peterborough forward.
Toney is married to home decor consultant Katie, and the couple have one son, Ivan Toney Junior, who was born in August 2019.
Toney has received online racist abuse and has condemned the way in which players have been used in PR campaigns against racism.
Toney's precise net worth is unclear, but Salary Sport reports that he earns £21,000 weekly at Brentford.
