Haaland was born in Leeds, where his father, Alf Inge Haaland, was playing for Leeds United. In 2004, aged three, Haaland moved to Bryne, his parents' hometown in Norway. There, he started out with local club Bryne before moving on to Molde.
Haaland's prolific goal-scoring exploits caught the eyes of Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. It was during his time there that he truly burst onto the scene.
At club level, he starred for Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League. Internationally, he made headlines by scoring nine goals for Norway U-20 in a 12-0 win over Honduras at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2019.
In the summer of 2022, he completed his £51million move to Manchester City and was a crucial part of their Treble winning team, netting an astonishing 52 goals, in 53 games, in his debut season with the club.
Haaland won the 2018 Eliteserien Breakthrough of the Year award and was likened by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Belgian star Romelu Lukaku, who played for Manchester United at the time - a club which Solskjaer previously played for and would soon manage.
On 19 August 2018, Red Bull Salzburg confirmed that Haaland would join the Austrian champions on 1 January of the following year. Haaland was also the subject of interest from his father's former club, Leeds United. However, he opted to sign a five-year contract with Salzburg.
On 19 July 2019, fresh off a famous nine-goal haul for Norway U-20 against Honduras, Haaland netted a hat-trick for Salzburg in an Austrian Cup win over SC-ESV Parndorf. On 10 August, he followed up with another hat-trick in a 5-2 Austrian Bundesliga win over Wolfsberger AC. Then, on 14 September, he scored yet another treble in a 7-2 win over TSV Hartberg.
A goal against Liverpool at Anfield and two goals against Napoli meant that Haaland became the second teenager in the history of the UEFA Champions League to score on his first three appearances in the competition. The first had been Karim Benzema. He then broke Benzema's record by scoring in his next two Champions League matches - the reverse fixtures against Napoli and Genk.
After a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool saw RB Salzburg eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, Haaland officially joined Borussia Dortmund on 29 December 2019.
Haaland hit the ground running at his new club, having signed a four-and-a-half-year contract. Within 23 minutes of his Bundesliga debut, he already had his first hat-trick for Dortmund in a 5-3 away win over FC Augsburg.
On 18 February, Haaland scored both of Dortmund's goals in their 2-1 UEFA Champions League round of 16 win over Paris Saint-Germain. When Dortmund lost the return leg 2-0 on 11 March, PSG players mocked and mimicked his goal celebration.
During the 2020/21 season, Haaland's tremendous form continued for Dortmund. He scored at around a goal per game and fired Dortmund into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League and helped the club win the DFB-Pokal trophy. Rumours continued to swirl of a potential exit from Dortmund for one of the biggest clubs in world football in one of its major leagues.
However, he remained at Dortmund for the 2021/22 season and even though his season was slightly hampered by injury he still managed 29 goals in 30 games in all competitions.
Reports suggested that Chelsea had made Haaland a central target, while he had also been linked with Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United.
But on May 10, it was revealed that Manchester City had agreed a deal for the Borussia Dortmund striker to pay the £51.1m release clause.
